The key idea
An agent can select steps or tools toward an objective. That flexibility adds a need for limits, observation and intervention—not a reason to remove accountability.

Our method
Specify permitted tools, data, spending limits and stopping conditions. Begin with a draft-only task and log the actions taken. Require review before publishing, contacting customers or making commitments. Test failure recovery before expanding the agent’s scope.
How to assess progress
Evaluate complete task success, unexpected actions, review burden and recovery time. More tool calls or longer autonomous runs are not inherently better performance.
Decision
Decide whether the task needs flexible planning or a fixed sequence of steps. A weekly export with stable rules may need ordinary automation; a research task with uncertain intermediate steps may justify an agent. Identify the specific decision freedom that creates value before granting tool access.
Exercise
Map one task as states: inputs ready, evidence collected, draft produced, review requested and complete. For every transition, specify the permitted action and a stopping condition. Run the agent in a test environment with a missing source, an unavailable tool and an instruction hidden inside retrieved content that conflicts with the task.
Deliverable
Create an action contract describing objective, allowed tools, input boundaries, maximum attempts, escalation triggers and the evidence required for completion. Add a sample run log showing which actions occurred and why the run stopped. A colleague should be able to identify and safely resume a failed step.
Pitfall
Do not let an agent redefine success when the original goal becomes difficult. Repeated searching, invented evidence or an unrequested external action are failures even if the final text looks complete. Evaluate the action history alongside the finished deliverable before widening its permissions.
