Measure visibility in AI answers responsibly

Build an observation framework that distinguishes mentions, citations, visits and enquiries.

The key idea

A mention in an AI answer is an observation under particular conditions, not a stable ranking shared by all users.

Our method

Define a relevant question set, record the platform, date, language and answer context, and check whether the cited page actually supports the answer. Track referral traffic and qualified enquiries separately from the observation log.

How to assess progress

Account for answer variability and limited attribution. Avoid presenting hand-picked screenshots as universal performance. Search crawling, model training and user-triggered browsing are different mechanisms.

Decision

Decide whether you need to observe brand recognition, source citation or commercially useful traffic. These are different questions and require separate records. Define the relevant market, language and buyer situation before collecting prompts, so a rise in mentions does not automatically become a claim of business growth.

Exercise

Build a fixed panel of fifteen questions covering category discovery, comparison and practical evaluation. Run the panel under recorded conditions and repeat observations on different dates. Save the question, complete answer, cited URLs and whether your organisation is mentioned accurately. Check a sample of absent and present mentions instead of selecting only favourable screenshots.

Deliverable

Deliver an observation ledger with platform, account context, date, language, question category, mention status, citation destination and factual issue. Keep a separate traffic table with identifiable referrals and completed actions. Explain the denominator whenever reporting a mention rate and retain the original evidence for each observation.

Pitfall

Changing the question panel while reporting a continuous percentage creates a misleading trend. Version the panel and compare unchanged questions separately when adding coverage. An uncited mention cannot prove which page influenced the answer, and a referral does not establish that every earlier answer displayed the same information.

Read Google AI impressions separately

Search Console’s Generative AI report records impressions of links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Compare impressions by page, country, device and date; dates use Pacific Time. These impressions overlap the Web report, so do not add the totals. The documented report provides neither AI clicks nor search queries: missing data is not zero. Keep ChatGPT citations in the observation sheet below. Measure visits, qualified enquiries and revenue separately, using your analytics and business records. Google impressions alone cannot establish those outcomes.

Track Bing citations separately

In Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance covers Microsoft Copilot, AI answers in Bing and selected partner experiences—not every AI service. Follow total citations, citations by URL and the daily average of unique cited pages over the same reporting period.

Grounding queries are phrases used to retrieve supporting content, not necessarily the user’s exact question. Their coverage is sampled. Citation Share describes your share of citations for a particular grounding query; it is neither a ranking nor a share of traffic.

When available, Topics Portfolio (beta) groups queries into themes. Its estimates and automated classifications are directional; limited activity can leave topics or the feature absent. Keep these observations separate from Google’s report and from measured visits and qualified enquiries. A citation is not a click or a conversion, and improvements do not guarantee future citations.

A worksheet for observing AI search visibility

Use these 15 starting questions to build a stable panel for your market. Adapt them to your buyers; they are examples, not measured search demand.

  1. Citation or appearance

Record the answer, cited page and observation context. An appearance does not prove a visit.

  2. Visit

Use separate analytics evidence of a website visit. Do not infer traffic from citation counts.

  3. Qualified enquiry or customer

Verify qualification and any sale in business records. Each step needs its own evidence; this is not a guaranteed funnel.

Understand

  1. How can I check whether AI answers cite pages from my website?
  2. How do AI citations differ from traditional search rankings?
  3. Which parts of my website should I examine before starting an AI visibility project?

Choose a method

  1. How should I prioritise technical fixes, content improvements and evidence?
  2. How can I assess whether a page answers a buyer’s question clearly?
  3. How should I adapt an AI visibility audit for several countries and languages?

Choose a provider

  1. What deliverables should I request in an AI visibility audit?
  2. What evidence should a provider show without promising rankings or citations?
  3. How can I compare proposals when providers use different visibility scores?

Measure

  1. How can I distinguish an AI citation from a visit to my website?
  2. How should I compare observations when answers vary by date, language or account?
  3. How can I connect qualified enquiries to available traffic evidence without collecting unnecessary personal data?

Decide whether to invest

  1. What baseline do I need before approving an AI visibility pilot?
  2. Which improvements should I fund first when my budget is limited?
  3. What results would justify continuing, changing or stopping the pilot?

The file is generated locally. This worksheet runs no searches, measures no ranking and sends no entered data. Keep sensitive information out of your notes.

Choose a useful next step

Understand how AI search finds sources, review your pages, then separate visibility observations from visits and enquiries. Use those findings to choose what to improve in your editorial workflow—not as a promise of citations.
